100 years is a long time. A really really long time. 100 years ago we were just entering into World War 1, and think how much the world has changed since then. We have had not 1, but 2 World Wars, the Woman Rights Movement, The Great Depression, Neil Armstrong landed on the Moon, Martin Luther King changed the world, The Rolling Stones rocked the world. Marilyn Monroe and James Dean define a long gone era, Iconic films have been made, Gone with the Wind, Casablanca and Harry Potter. We have had the swinging sixties, the surreal seventies, Madonna has released 13 Albums, The Kardashians were born. Basically a lot of stuff has happened in 100 years, and in all that time, through all those huge cultural events, ONE bottle of Louis XIII cognac was made. That's right, it takes 100 years to make just one bottle. They say that time is the ultimate luxury, and if thats the case, Louis XIII is pretty damn luxurious. So how do you celebrate something that takes 100 years to make, something that takes 4 generations of experts to refine? You need to do something pretty special!
So special is exactly what they decided to do. Louis XIII flew media from around the world to Los Angeles last week to announce a project they have secretly been working on with director Robert Rodriguez and actor/ designer/writer Jon Malkovich, and we were lucky enough to have been invited. We knew the project was movie based, and on our first night we were treated to a behind the scenes tour of the Warner Bros. Studio, which was a totally unforgettable experience, followed by a cocktail party set in the roaring 1920’s. However, it was not until the next day that the top secret project was announced. To celebrate the 100 years it takes to make Louis XIII, Malkovich and Rodriguez have created a film that will not be premiered for 100 years. Meaning nobody currently one alive, not even them, will ever get to see this film.
The film was written by, and stars Jon Malkovich, and is set in a potential future, envisaged by the pair. Through the three accompanying teaser trailers we are offered glimpses into what the future might look like, (links below) but only one of these teasers is for the actual film, which one is anyones guess. All we know about the film is that is focuses on the concept of time, past, present and future, and that there's some expensive cognac in it. It is a fascinating idea, to create something that no one will ever see, a huge labour of love for something that its creator can never experience, it is totally selfless, to provide something that can only be enjoyed by future generations. After the media announcement the brand threw a huge Hollywood style party, at the exclusive Goldtstein Residence in Beverly Hills. At the party, attended by Leonardo DiCaprio, Emma Roberts, Solange Knowles and Zac Posen, (amongst others) the film was ceremoniously locked away in a safe that is automatically programmed to open in 100 years time. We then finally got to taste Louis VIII, the 100 year old Cognac, and let us tell you, it is worth the wait! All too quickly it was time to get back on the plane, but not before we were given our ticket to the world premiere 100 Years: The Movie You Will Never See. Well, not exactly our tickets, but tickets for our descendants. Now, in 100 years, that will make us pretty cool ancestors.
